Choosing one artist as your favourite is really hard (i think) for almost everyone. Personally, I really like rock music, but today i will talk about a Chilean band called Quilapayun.
They are one of the most important folk music group of this country. They had an important participation in the government of Salvador Allende, in 1970. After the military coup, in 1973, while they were in a tour in France, Quilapayun was forced to the exile. They were back in Chile in 1988 to support the opposition.
Probably almost everyone I've listened a song of Quilapayun. The most famous is “La muralla”, but the most iconic, “El pueblo unido jamas será vencido” is the best song I've ever heard. It is a little bit hard to listen to this guys, specially if you are not agree with they political thinking, but even if this is the case, you cannot forget the musical value that Quilapayun have.
To me, the best work of them is the “Cantata Santa Maria de Iquique”, in honor to the 3000 miners of the saltpeter that were killed in 1907 by the militarys. When you know what happened there you really understand this masterpiece.

There are some members of Quilapayun, with Victor Jara. Victor was the director of the group for a few years.
I like quilapayun too <3 but is not my favorite Chilean band.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of this band, but I fell that his lyrics must be very deep and sad:(
ReplyDeleteSuch an iconic Chilean folk band. I taught a class where I used "la Cantata de Santa María" for cultural purposes. Great choice!
